Simon Harper & Eleanor Perks
Winter into Spring: a song recital
Simon Harper (tenor) and Eleanor Perks (piano) present “Winter into Spring: a song recital” at St Michael’s. The programme will include Finzi’s song cycle Let us garlands bring, Copland’s Four Early Songs, and songs by Faure and Schubert.
A former chorister of St Michael’s, Simon now sings as a Lay Clerk in Hereford Cathedral Choir, and is Musical Director of Hereford Chamber Choir, Ledbury Choral Society, Kington Choral Society, and Cotswolds-based Cantores Chamber Choir.

Naissance
A duo of saxophone and piano, utilising also some occasional subtle electronic samples, Naissance plays a type of music between improvisation and composition, between jazz and classical, exploring sound and silence, shade and light. The music appeals to contemporary audiences with both classical and contemporary jazz/ambient interests. This is very much crossover music of today, exploring minimalism and atmosphere, a touch of ambient music and with some beautiful melodies in there too. The music is also meditational, and audiences may find both the music and the space spiritually uplifting.
Tickets are £15 (£5 for under 18s)

Reason within Madness: Imogen and Daniel returned to St Michael’s to present a varied programme of repertoire exploring female hysteria represented through songs and arias.
Imogen Baker a former chorister here, and a prize-winning graduate of the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, is currently studying for her masters with Susan Waters, at the Royal Academy of Music

Chamber Choir Christmas Concert
Southampton University Chamber Choir presented a concert of seasonal music. This award-winning group, made up of 20-25 singers from around the university, is led by director, Simon Petite.

The University Chamber Orchestra with guest Musical Director, Daniel Hogan, presented an exciting autumn programme of Farrenc’s Overture No.1, Faure’s Masques et Bergamaques (taken by Assistant Musical Director, Charlotte Chappell) and the iconic Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.

New Faces
Introducing the University’s new postgraduate performers as they embark on their advanced studies, these young musicians demonstrated their creativity and talent in a series of signature pieces.
SUMMER PUDDING CONCERT
WEDNESDAY, JULY 19TH — Billed as a feast of music and puddings, this evening delivered on both counts. Young and old performers (but especially young, gave us popular and classical pieces sung or played with consumate skill. The Junior Choir taught us some of the rounds they sing to warm up, and all the choristers, junior and senior, rounded off the event with a beautiful rendition of “The Mountains Shall Bring Peace”, a commission piece for this year’s coronation celebrations. Great fun was had by all!
VIEW EXCERPTSORIGINAL JAZZ FROM THE JFL TRIO
THURSDAY, AUGUST 17th 2023 — The JFL Trio gave us a great selection of original pieces from their repertoire, weaving the music with the stories of where they came from and what inspired them. J, the pianist in the trio, draws on many influences and genres – a heady blend of striking melodies, unusual time signatures, imaginative harmonies and driving rhythms. Played on the rich tones of our grand piano, they’ve never sounded so good! Lewis Treasure (bass) and Ted Carrasco (drums) are intuitive and virtuosic musicians, and they brought their own inspration and style in a truly ensemble performance.
JAMES DRUCE: TRUMBONE RECITAL
FRIDAY, June 16th — Royal Academy of Music graduate James Druce performed a sparkling recital of trombone, for the most part arrangements of songs, played on the tenor and alto trombone. The finale featured vocals from soprano Imogen Baker. The concert was expertly accompanied by Colin Druce.

SATURDAY, June 24th — Prize-winning British soprano, Imogen Baker gave us a prodigious performance of operatic arias highlighting heroines from history and fiction, each demonstrating and inspiring the power and beauty of her extraordinary voice. Imogen —originallly from Southampton and a member of St Michael’s junior choir! — is currently studying at the Royal Academy of Music. Equally noteworthy was the playing of Daniel Silcock, who studied at at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland and is now also at the Royal School of Music. He accompanied the pieces with both sensitivity and brilliance.

TUESDAY. May 9th — At the first concert in this series at St Michael’s, we witnessed wonderful performances from third year and post-graduate music students from Southampton University. Pianists Priscilla Ou & Yihan Chen, Flautist Emily Manning, Violinist Xinyi Wu, Double-bassist Kexin Yang, and sopranos Jingwen Lin & Yijia Cheng, played music from Handel, Chopin, Scriabin, Amy Beach, and others. David Owen Norris accompanied.
A great start to the series, with the promise of more to come!
SU STRINGS — CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS
FRIDAY, May 19th 2023 — A really fun evening with SU Strings who gave us a varied programmes of pieces for string orchestra, soloists and small ensembles. The highlight was undoubtedly Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, which featured several other instrumentalists and was played with exuberance and humour.
